what are the 5 main functions of the bones?

support,protection,movement,storage,blood cell formation.

what is compact bone?

its dense and looks smooth and homogeneous.

what is spongy bone?

its composed of small needlelike pieces of bone and lots of open space

what are long bones?

they are typically longer than they are wide. femur,humerus,tibia,fibula

what are short bones?

generally cube shaped and contain mostly spongy bone. the bones of the wrist and ankles are short bones.

what are flat bones?

they are thin,flattened and usually curved. they have two thin layers of compact bone sandwhiching a layer of spongy bone between them. most bones of the skull,ribs,strenum are flat bones

what are irregular bones?

bones that do not fit in one of the other categories are ireggular. the spincal column are irregualr bones.

what is diaphysis?

is the shaft and makes up most of the bones length and is composed of compact bone.

what membreane is diaphysis covered by?

periosteum which is fibrous connective tissue

what are true ribs?

the first 7 pairs attatched directly to the sternum by costal cartilages

what are false ribs?

the next 5 pairs either attached indirectly to the strenum or are not attatched to the sternum at all.

what are floating ribs?

the last 2 pairs of the false ribs lack sternal attatchments so they are called floating ribs.

what is the coccyx?

its formed from the fusion of 3-5 tiny irregular shaped vertebraes
