A small ragged boy
His name is Jan. He lives on the street. He is very clever. He steals food and other items. He survives with no family. Joseph gives him the silver sword. He helps Joseph jump the train

The silver sword
a small sword used for opening letters etc. It was orginally a gift from Joseph to his wife. Joseph finds it in the rubble and gives it to Jan. He is to give it to the children if he ever meets them and tell them to go to Switzerland
Mrs Krause
A woman whose child use to go to Joseph's school. She was a member of the Polish Council for protection. She told Joseph what happened to his family. She was a kind woman who gave Joseph a place to stay.
