Crucifix to show that God sacrificed his only son for the love of humanity.




In Anglican and Catholic Churches, bishops carry a crozier which symbolises the role of the bishop as a successor of the apostles who is to feed Jesus' flock.

Other symbolic actions:

Clothing and Actions can also be symbolic. In many religious traditions, ritual actions, such as kneeling and standing at certain times when praying in a religious service indicate worshop and submission to God.




In Islam the performance of Salah involves following a symbolic pattern of actions whilst praying.

Difference between sign and symbol:

Sign: something which points you in a certain direction or indicates something.




Symbol: something which not only points you in the right direction but also communicates a much greater understanding of God than what can be put into words. A symbol would be like the Crucifix.

Religious symbols communicate the most significant beliefs and values and these are different to that of words.




God in Tillich's view is seen as the ground of being. The ground of being cannot be known or comprehended in a personal way but can be known through symbols.

What is a myth?
A story which communicates the values and/or ultimate belief of a culture or society.
