The ID |
present at birth, represents a biological, instinctual component that cannot bear tension. Id functions under the pleasure principle (immediate gratification) Avoidance/Diminishing of Pain/Securing of Pleasure. Not rational/logical & has no concept of time.

The Ego |
develops as the psychological component that wields power over the id. The ego functions under the reality principle and realistically plans ways to fulfill needs in an appropriate manner. EGO is pressed by ID to give into pleasure despite consequences. Ego operates in the concscious/preconscious

The SUPERego |
represents the social component made up of the conscious and the ego ideals. Superego pursues perfection. Guilty feelings develop as a violation of the superego’s morals and standards.

Sexuality (Libido), Hunger & Pain, Aggression |

Cathexis |
sources of energy are tied to thoughts/actions/ objects and people

Fixation |
resistance of a person to move on to the next stage because the cathexis is TOO intense.
Examples of this is trauma. |

Oral Stage |
(0-2 years) Pleasure is derived from sucking & nursing. |

Anal Stage |
(2-3 years)" imposed control" is first found in the form of toileting. Gratification being found in withholding or expelling feces |

Phallic Stage |
(3-6 years) Pleasure is derived from fondling genitals. Children observes differences btw gender and direct their awakening sexual impulses towards the parent of the opposite sex |

Latency Stage |
(6-Puberty) Less concerned with body and more towards skills needed to cope with the environment. |

Genital Stage |
(Puberty) Adolescents are turning his/her interests towards others and to love in a more mature way |

Wish Fulfillment |
Freud believed that a dream can be a wish fulfillment . Wishes or desires can be conscious/unconscious |
