What is anthromorphism for?
red blood cells
white blood cells |
What are the three parts of the blood?
1. PLASMA
2. WHITE BLOOD CELL/PLATELETS 3. RED BLOOD CELLS |
Define plasma.
Plasma is top layer of blood. It makes up more than half of the blood. It is straw colored.
What is the proper name for red blood cells?
ERYTHROCYTES
What is the main function of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen to the brain and other organs AND then to return to lungs to exchange carbon dioxide (waste) for more oxygen. P. 25 - B3
Where are the red blood cells formed?
in bone marrow
What substances makes red blood cells the color red?
HEMOGLOBIN
What is hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin is an IRON containing PIGMENT that makes erythrocytes appear a red color.
List characteristics of ERYTHROCYTES (red blood cells.)
1. concave disc shaped cell (has dent)
2. NO Nucleus 2. transport oxygen 3. contain hemoglobin |

Define anemia.
Anemia is a condition when a perosn can not carry enough oxygen rich blood to the body either because they breathed in carbon dioxide or they lack iron.
What is the proper name for white blood cells?
LEUKOCYTES
riddle: Luke was white - LEUKOCYTES |
What is the function of white blood cells (Leukocytes)?
1. fighting off foreign
substances/disease 2. producing antibodies that fight disease |
Define ANTIBODIES.
ANTIBODIES are chemicals that attack invading organisms or poisons.
Define ANTIGENS.
ANTIGENS are molecules that do not belong in the body. They are recognized by special white blood cells called macrophages that attack them.
What type of white blood cell is used by the immune system?
LYMPHOCYTES - are used by the immune system to fight off pathogens.
Define Pathogens.
bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that can cause sickness and death
NAME THE 2 TYPES OF LYMPHOCYTES of the immune system:
T CELLS - job: identify antigens
(killer T cells attack/helper T cells go get B cells) B CELLS - JOB: Produce plasma which produce more antibodies to destroy pathogen |
What is the primary function of the excretory system?
Remove wastes form the blood and to eliminate the wastes from the body.
What is the main organ of the excretory system?
kidneys
Function of kidney:
filters waste from the blood
(reddish brown, bean shaped organs located in lower back) |
Function of ureters:
tubes that carry wastes from kidney to bladder
Function of urinary bladder:
muscular bag that temporarily stores fluid wastes from the kidneys
Function of the urethra:
muscular tube that carries wastes from bladder to outside of body
What is a NEPHRON?
a unit in the kidney that filters the blood; about one million nephrons in each kidney

the internal balance an organism must maintain for good health
homeostatsis
small structures found in the blood (a part of white blood cell) involved in forming blood clots
platelets
