No. Racks should be empty when moved.
What are the three types of multi-tier servers?
front-end
mid-tier
back-end
What are the three types of servers?
general purpose servers
appliance servers
application servers
What is the role of a general purpose server?
To provide a wide variety of services. Often used in small businesses.
What is the role of an appliance server?
To provide a single service. Field Replaceable Unit (FRU)
What is the role of an application server?
To run programs accessed by multiple users.
What are the types of application server?
dedicated application server
distributed application server
peer-to-peer application server
What is the role of a dedicated application server?
To serve the needs of the PCs within a network (i.e. print server).
What is the role of a Distributed Application Server?
To provide applications for specific end users (i.e. mail server).
What is the role of a Peer-to-peer Application Server?
To provide sharing of computer goods and services by directly exchanging information between users (i.e. Napster)
What is the role of an Anonymous Proxy Server?
To provide proxy services while hiding the IP information of the client PCs. (i.e. NAT)
Define Reverse Proxy Cache
When a proxy server acts as the original server from which the client requests data.
Define Forward Proxy Cache
When a proxy server forwards requests through the cache to the original server.
Define Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Internet standard protocol to manage IP network servers, workstations, routers, switches and hubs.
What is a Bounce Attack?
Misuse of the FTP PORT command to gain access to ports on other machines.
Define Hammering
The repeated attempt to connect with an unavailable FTP server without permitting a normal delay between attempts. Overloads the FTP server causing it to deny all requests.
What is an SNA Server?
Allows client access to mainframe (IBM) and mid-range data facilities. Succeeded by Host Integration Server (HIS) 2000.
What is a NAS Server?
Network Attached Storage. Better scalability than SAN.
What is a SAN Server?
Storage Area Network. A fiber network designed to consolidate all server storage into a single large array of disks.
What is a RAS Server?
Remote Access Server. Allowing a client to dial in.
What is a WINS Server?
Windows Internet Naming Space. Maps NETBIOS names to IP addresses.
What is a DHCP Server?
Dynamic Host Control Protocol. Temporarily assigns dynamic IP addresses to network devices.
What is a Front-End Server?
Hosts services on the leading edge of a network. Field replaceable. (Similar to appliance servers. Mail servers, proxy servers, firewalls, web servers)
What is a Mid-Tier Server?
Used to process and relay information between front-end and back and servers (similar to a general purpose servers)
What is a Back-End Server?
Large expensive units used to store vast volumes of data in archive and data farms.
What is a Data Warehouse?
A computer storage system containing a wide variety of data (aka data farm)
