Company's board of directors approved a dividend payment, it also designates the payment date and dividend record date
Ex Dividend Date
On the basis of the dividend record date, FINRA or the exchange (if listed) posts an ex-date. The ex date is two business days before the record date. A customer must purchase the stock 3 business days before the record date to qualify for the dividend.
On the ex-date, the stocks opening price is reduced by the amount of the dividend to compesate for the fact that customers who buy the stock that day do not qualify
