What is Search Engine Optimization(SEO)?
* A subset marketing strategy of Search Engine Marketing
* The process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic" search results.
What other types of search can SEO target?
Image, local and industry-specific vertical search engines
SEO includes what types of work efforts?

What is spidering?
A "spider" is a program that visits a Web site and reads its pages and other information in order to create entries for a search engine index. By allowing your site to be spidered, URLs, keywords, links and text specifically related to your site would be stored in a secure knowledge base. The depth of spidering depends on the amount of access given spiders.
What is "search engine friendly"?
Describes designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
What is an indexer?
An indexer extracts various information from a page such as the words it contains, location and weight for specific words, all links the page contains.
What is used by search engines to determine page ranking?
3)Page Rank (developed by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin) estimates the likelihood that a given page will be reached by a web user who randomly surfs the web.

What site optimizers to the major search engines provide?
Google - Sitemaps to help webmasters learn if Google is having any problems indexing their website and also provides data on Google traffic to the website.
Yahoo! Site Explorer provides a way fro webmasters to submit URLs, determine how many pages are in the Yahoo! index and view link information.
How can listings be prevented?
Webmasters can instruct spiders not to crawl certain files or directories through the standard robots.txt file in the root directory of the domain. A page can be explicitly excluded by using a meta tag specific to robots. The robots.txt file is the first file to be crawled by a search engine.
What pages should not be crawled?
login specific pages such as shopping carts and user-specific content from internal searches.
What is white hat SEO?
Best practices that create content for users and making that content easily accessible to spiders.
What is black hat SEO?
Attempting to improve rankings in ways that are disapproved by the search engines or involve deception i.e. such as hidden text either as text colored similar to the background or positioned off screen. Or building a page that is more human friendly versus search engine friendly.
What additional steps are needed for international SEO?
1)translation of content
2)meta tags and alt attributes
3)registration of a local domain.
