independent clause

a group of words with both a subject and a predicate that could stand alone as a complete sentence

dependent clause

a group of words that may contain a subject or a predicate or both - but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence (does not express a complete thought)

prepositional phrase

a group of words that begin with a preposition and end with a noun or pronoun; prepositional phrases are dependent clauses

subordinating conjuction

a conjunction that introduces a subordinate (dependent) clause; i.e., although, because, until, whenever, etc.

simple sentence

consists of just one independent clause

compound sentence

consists of two or more independent clauses joined correctly with punctuation


(semi-colon or a comma followed by a conjunction)

complex sentence

consists of at least one independent clause and one dependent clause
