General Senses

Touch, temperature, pain, proprioception

Special Senses

Smell, taste, vision, hearing, equilibrium

Sensory Receptors

Specialized, only certain kinds of stimulation, convert stimulation to nerve impulse.

Kinds of Receptors

Chemoreceptors, thermoreceptors, nociceptors, mechanoreceptors, baroreceptors, photoreceptors

Mechanoreceptors

A sensory receptor that responds to mechanical pressure or distortion. Pacinian corpuscles, Meissner's corpuscles, Merkel's discs, Ruffini endings. Hearing and equilibrium

Thermoreceptor

A non-specialized sensory receptor, or neuron, that codes absolute and relative changes in temperature, primarily within the innocuous range.

Nociceptor

A sensory nerve cell that responds to damaging or potentially damaging stimuli by sending signals to the spinal cord and brain.

Referred Pain

pain felt in a part of the body other than its actual source.

Chemoreceptors

Sensory extensions of the peripheral nervous system into blood vessels where they detect changes in chemical concentrations. Smell and taste.

Photoreceptors

Photosensitive cell in the retina.
