-increased Cl- into postsynaptic neuron which decreases action potentials
Potentiates GABAergic neurotransmission at all levels of CNS
Benzo receptor involved in sedation and hypnosis
BZ 1 receptor--> alpha1-GABA-A receptors
Benzo receptor involved in cognition and motor function
BZ 2 receptor--> alpha2-GABA-A receptors
Anxiolytic action of Benzos
-w/in the Limbic System
-BZ 2 receptors mainly
Hypnotic action of Benzos
-BZ 1 receptors mainly
-Decrease:
-time to onset of sleep
-stage 3&4 of sleep cycle
-Prolong stage 1&2

Alprazolam
Ideal benzo for conscious sedation and outpatient procedures?
Midazolam (Versed)
3-4x more potent than diazepam
-short-acting
Benzodiazepine antagonist?
Flumazenil (Mazicon)
-for use to reduce sedative effects after anesthesia or for an overdose.
-caution in pts with long-term benzo use-> can induce seizures
Non-benzo benzodiazepines?
-Zolpidem (Ambien)
-Eszopiclone (Lunesta)
Treatment of insomnia?
-Zolpidem (Ambien)
-Eszopiclone (Lunesta)
