Free Soil
Free Soil Party was a short lived political party in the U.S., active in the 1848 and 1852 elections. It was a third party that largely appealed to New York, and consisted of members of the whigs and democrats. Its main purpose was opposing the expansion of slavery into the west.
Wilmot Proviso
At the end of the Mexican War, the new lands west of Texas rekindled the debate over expansion of slavery. Southern politicians wanted to permit slavery, while the Northern politicians wanted it banned. In the Wilmot Proviso, Wilmot proposed banning slavery in the west in 1846, before the Mexican War ended.
James K. Polk
Polk was an expansionist democrat from Kentucky, and was elected president on a Manifest Destiny platform in 1844. During his presidency, he lowered the protective tariff, revived the independent treasury, acquired Oregon, and seized California in the Mexican War.
Election of 1860
This election set the stage for thte American Civil War. The nation was already divided over states rights and slavery. Lincoln won the election which caused the south to secede.
Popular Sovereignty
Popular Sovereignty is the belief that the legitimacy of the state is created by the will or consent of its people, who are the source of all political power.
Compromise of 1850
In 1850, the North and South agreed to compromise the issue of Slavery and California's acceptance into the union. This Compromise benefited the North more than the South. Californias admission tipped the balance between free and slave states, having 16 free and 15 slave states. This set a precedent in the wwes against slavery. In washington D.C. slave trade was outlawed. The Compromise adverted Civil War for 10 more years allowing the North to develop industrially.
Crittenden Compromise
Hoping to prevent war, Senator John Crittenden suggested adding an amendment to the constitution to protect slavery in all territories south of the 36 30'. Many southerners contemplated this Crittenden compromise, but Lincoln rejected it.
