Water Cycle

The movement of water between the atmosphere, land, oceans, and even living things.

Evaporation

When liquid water changes into water vapor (gas).

Transpiration

The release of water vapor into the air by plants

Sublimation

When solid water changes directly into a gas.

Condensation

The change of state from a gas to a liquid. It is how clouds form.

Precipitation

Any form of water that falls to the Earth from clouds. Rain/Hail/Snow.

Energy Changes

Evaporation

Water gains energy as it goes from a liquid to a gas. Usually due to an increase in temperature.

Energy Changes

Sublimation

Water gains energy as it goes from a solid to a gas. Usually due to low pressure and cold winds.

Energy Changes

Condensation

Water loses energy as it changes from a gas to a liquid. Usually due to a decrease in temperature.

Weather

The condition of the Earth's atmosphere at a certain time and place.

Climate

Average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.

Humidity

The amount of water vapor in the air.

Dew Point

The temperature at which more condensation than evaporation occurs. Water droplets will form on the surface of things or fog will be in the air.

Air Pressure

The force of air molecules pushing on an area.

Wind

Air that moves horizontally, or parallel to the ground.

Visibility

a measure of the transparency of the atmosphere. It will be how far you can see into the distance.

Air Mass

A large volume of air in which temperature and moisture content are nearly the same throughout.

Front

A boundary between two different air masses.

Jet Stream

Long distance winds that travel above global winds for thousands of kilometers.
