What is a SOLID?
Firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid.

- all particles are touching each other, allowing nothing to pass through them
Give an EXAMPLE of a SOLID
wood, plastic, metal, paper, stone, bone, straw, wax, ceramic and clay
What is a LIQUID?
Having a consistency like that of water or oil, i.e., flowing freely but of constant volume.

- all particles are close together, but not compact, thus allowing a flow through effect
Give an EXAMPLE of a LIQUID
gel, water, oil, syrup
What is a GAS?
An airlike fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity.

- particles are very loosely apart, making it very easy to pass through them
Give an EXAMPLE of a GAS
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Hydrogen
Helium
Carbon-dioxide
Hydrogen-sulfide
Carbon-monoxide
Propane
What is MATTER?
Objects that take up space and have mass are called matter. Including chocolate cake!
What is MATTER MADE of?
tiny MOVING particles.
Particles are always moving, what does this cause?
The higher the particles temperature the greater the speed at which they move.
Which particle moves FASTER, Heavy or Light particles?

GIVE A REASON
Lighter Particles, because a large mass takes more energy to accelerate than a smaller mass
What is DIFFUSION?
Describes the spread of particles through random motion from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration.
Give an example of DIFFUSION
Adding water to a cordial is diffusion - the movement of the cordial from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration ie dilution
What is DENSITY?
Density is the mass of an object or substance, divided by it's volume.
Give an EXAMPLE of DENSITY
An example of real life density is "ice floating on water."

Ice floats on water because it is less dense than water.

Things that are less dense float on top of things that are more dense, BECAUSE molecules in ice are further apart than molecules in water.
What is the EQUATION for DENSITY?
Mass / volume = Density
What is the EQUATION for VOLUME?
Length x Width x height = Volume
What is MASS?
Mass is the amount of matter an object has.

- mass = weight of object
Solid ----> Liquid = ?
Melting
Liquid ----> Gas = ?
Evaporation
Gas ----> Liquid = ?
Condensation
Liquid ----> Solid = ?
Freezing
What is the boiling point?
the point at which liquid boils and turns to vapor is 100 degrees Celsius
What is made from PARTICLES?
EVERYTHING
What does KINETIC energy increase with?
Temperature
What is PHYSICAL change?
When one state of matter changes to another.

EXAMPLE: Liquid to Gas (evaporation)
There are only 4 states of matter, list them.
PLASMA
SOLID
LIQUID
GAS
What is a CHEMICAL change?
When substances are mixed together to make a reaction and cannot be changed back to their original state.
True or False

Can you see physical changes?
True
True or False

Can you see Chemical changes?
False
What are the BUILDING BLOCK's of life?
Cells, they come in all shapes & sizes
Name the 7 LIFE PROCESSES of a cell (how to prove that they are living)

Hint: MRS GREN
Movement - to move
Respiration - to let out energy
Sensitivity - to feel change in temperature
Growth - to get bigger
Reproduction - to make population bigger
Excretion - to poo / pee out waste of body
Nutrition - to eat, good food, necessary for health & growth.
True or False

Animal and Plant cells are different, but have the same 3 basic features.
True
Name 3 basic features that Animal and Plant cells have.
nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane,
PLANTS: What is the NUCLEA's ?
It is the Brain of the cell & holds the DNA
PLANTS: What is the VACUOLE ?
It gets rid of unwanted waste in the cell.
PLANTS: What is the CHLOROPLAST ?
enables cells to photosynthesis and gives the plant its color.
PLANTS: What is the CELL WALL ?
It is the structure of the cell.
PLANTS: What is the CELL MEMBRANE ?
It holds everything in the cell together.
PLANTS: What is the CYTOPLASM ?
It is basically the substance that fills the cell. It is a jelly-like material that is eighty percent water and usually clear in color.
Who was the first to name CELLS?
English, Robert Hooke
What is the CELL THEORY?
Cells make up all living things.

Some cells act independently, as well as together in tissues.
True or False

Does FUNGI have a NUCLEUS in their cell?
False
Give 2 examples of FUNGI
Bread / Mushrooms
What is BACTERIA ?
Bacteria are single celled microbes.

The cell structure is simpler than that of other organisms as there is

- NO nucleus or membrane bound organelles.
What is PROTISTS ?
The protists are a diverse group of eukaryotes that cannot be classified as animals, plants, or fungi.

- These organisms are eukaryotes, meaning they are made up of single or multiple cells which all contain a nucleus enclosed by a membrane.
True or False

Is FIRE living?
False
What is a SPECIES?
A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.
