Another name for the cardiovascular system
circulatory system
What is the cardiovascular system?
--Like a highway network for the body;
Consists of the heart, blood vessles and blood
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
--delivering needed materials
--removing/carries waste products away from cells
--fighting disease
Explain the deliverying system of the cardiovascular system.
Most substances that need to get from one part of the body to another are carried by the blood.
Carries oxygen from lungs to other body cells.
--Transports glucose
How does the cardiovascular system remove waste?
picks up waste from cells.
Example: Cells break down glucose. They produce carbon dioxide as a waste product.
Carbon dioxide passes from cells into blood.
Cardiovascular system carries carbon dioxide to lungs and it is exhaled.
How does the cardiovascular system fight diseases?
The system transports cells that attack disease-causing microorganisms.
If you get sick, these diseas fighting blood cells kill the microorganims and help you get well.
What materials does the cardiovascular system deliver throughout the body?
Oxygen and glucose
How does it grea rid of carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide is passed from cells into the blld, and then carreid to the lungs where it is exhaled.
Name one needed material and one waste product transported by the cardiovascular system?
oxygen
glucose
waste product: carbon dioxide
How does the cardiovascular system help fight disease?
It trnansports cells that attack disease-causing microorganisms.
What are the four chambers of the heart?
right atrium
right ventricle
left atrium
left ventricle
Which chambers contain oxygen-rich blood?
left atrium
left ventricle
How could thick walls benefit the ventricles?
Thick walls give ventricles the muscular strength to pump blood out of the heart.
Describe the heart.
a hollow, muscular organ that pums bood throughout the body
What size is the heart?
about the size of a fist
heart
made of cardia muscle which conrtract over and over withou getting tired
atrium
Each of the two upper chambers is called an atrium that receives blood that comes from the heart
ventricle
Each lower chamber is called a ventricle and it pumps blood out of the heart
valve
A valve is a flap of tissue that prevents blood from flowing backward.
What is a pacemaker?
A group of heart cells located in the right atrium that sends out signals that make the heart muscle contract and that regulates heart rates. It than adjusts.
capillary
A tiny blood vessel where substances are exchanged between the blood and body cells.
vein
A blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart.
aorta
The largest artery in the body; receives blood from the left ventricle.
how many sides does a heart have?
two sides.
The right side of the heart is completely separated from the left side by a wall of tissue called the septum.
How many chambers are there?
Each side has two compartments or chambers--an upper chamber and a lower chamber
What sounds do your heart make?
The "lub" comes from the closing of the valves between the atria and ventricles.
--dup comes from the closing of the valves between the vbentricles and the blood vessels.
How does the heart work?
Two phases:
1. heart muscle relaxes and the heart fills with blood.
2. the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood forward.
A healthbeat sounds like a lub-dup.
What is the function of a pacemaker?
it adjusts the heart rate to meet the body's oxygen needs.
Where are valves located?
Valves are also located between the ventrticles and the large blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Where does the blood that enters the left atrium come from?
The lungs
