Explain what surface water is and where is it located?

In oceans and lakes above earth's surface.
What is a water diversion project?

It's where many countries share the same river or lake.
Name two different water diversion projects?

Dams - blocks water

Reservoirs - lets water flow

Why do people build dams?

To change the flow of a river or lake for industry and irrigation purposes.

How can dams cause problems for the environment? Be specific.

By changing the flow of water...and this can kill fish and plants.

How can dams cause problems for people?

It can cause water to go down in areas, or possibly flood other areas.

What is point source pollution?

Pollution that comes from a specific site.

(Sewage)

What is non-point pollution?

Pollution that comes from many sources.

(Oil spills)

What kind of pollutant are fertilizers considered?
Non-Point Source Pollution. Organic material.
Why is ground water pollution so difficult to clean?
Because it's contaminated by dirt and sand.

Name the sources of ocean pollution.

Ships or from the land.

Where does most ocean pollution come from?

The land.

List all the parts of the water cycle.

Precipitation, Condensation, Evaporation
Where is most of earth's fresh water located?

Rivers, lakes, ponds, icebergs and glaciers
Explain how industry uses fresh water.

By using fresh water to use to make things generate power.

How are areas of the earth with no fresh water resources still being inhabited.

By many different species. Also from dams and reservoirs.

Why is fresh water considered a limited resource especially in certain areas?

Because Earth is only like 2% fresh water.

Name five ways you can conserve water in your home.
Sprinkler systems, shorter showers, adjust toilet levels, limit time at the sink, fix drippy faucets

Why are phosphates (located in detergents) banned in some areas?
Because it's not a common thing and harmful to the environment.
Name some things that can happen as a result of plastic accumulating in the oceans.

Marine life can be strangled

It can block out the sun's rays

If two communities share a river for a water source and the upstream community built a new dam, what might happen to the relationship between the two communities?

They will not like each other because one community will suffer from the lack of water.

Explain why thermal pollution is harmful.

The change in temperature can kill animals and plants.

Why do they add chlorine to the water during the treatment process?

To kill bacteria.

Name three ways that local water supplies can be supplemented and give a short description for each way.

Dams - raise the water level

Canals - routes the water to a specific area

Reservoir - controls flow of the water

Where do most large cities get water for households and industries?

Lakes and reservoirs

Name some effects of water pollution on ecosystems.

Can kill plants and animals, which will completely change the environment.

What effect can building a large parking lot on an aquifer?

It would likely dry up the aquifer.

Explain how erosion might effect a river or stream ecosystem negatively?

By losing plants and soil, the river flow and coastline can change. This may lead to floods or possibly droughts.

What is desalination?

Process of removing salt from ocean water.

If water in an aquifer is used up too quickly then it is replenished, what effects does this have on the water table? What effect does it have on people and animals that depend on the water source.

The water table would decrease or disappear. This would have a negative impact on people and animals that depend on that water source for life.
