What is the Atmosphere?

A series of protective layers that keeps the air inside of the Earth

What does the atmosphere protect us from?

Sun's harmful Ultra Violet rays

What does the Atmosphere destroy?

Meteoroids

What is the Atmosphere responsible for?

Keeping the water on Earth from evaporating

What in the Atmosphere is responsible for supporting life?

Oxygen (which is contained in the TROPOSPHERE)

How thick is the Atmosphere?

Over 1000km thick

Where is MOST of the gas in the atmosphere?

Stratosphere

What happens to the number of gas molecules as you get further from the Earth?

They become scarcer (lessen)

What type of mixture is FRESH AIR?

Fresh air is a homogenous mixture of nitrogen and oxygen.

What are the two main gasses in the atmosphere?

Nitrogen (n2) and Oxygen (o2)

What gases are found in smaller quantities in the Atmosphere?

Water vapor (H2O) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

What type of mixture is POLLUTED AIR?

Heterogeneous mixture of suspended solid particles

List the layers of the Atmosphere.

Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere

What happens to the temperature in each layer of the Atmosphere?

Troposphere = temperature lowers

Stratosphere = temperature rises

Mesosphere = temperature lowers

Thermosphere = temperature rises

List characteristics of the Troposhphere

Varies in thickness

Thickest in Equatorial regions

Contains 80% of all air in the Atmosphere.

List characteristics of the Stratosphere

40km thick

Located above the Troposhphere

Contains OZONE layer

less friction

List characteristics of the Mesosphere

40km thick

varies widely in temperature

Protects earth from Meteoroids

Air molecules are scarce

List characteristics of the Thermosphere

Last layer of atmosphere

Thickest layer: measures over 90km

Sun's rays exceed 1000 degrees C.

Ionosphere is found here

Protects Earth from Meteoroids

Site of the Magnificent phenoenon Polar Auroras

What is the cause of the Hole in the Ozone Layer?

ChloroFluoroCarbons a.k.a. CFC's

What causes CFC's?

Refrigeration equipment (refrigerators and Air Conditioners)

What are the effects of CFC's?

Thinning of the Ozone layer resulting in possible increase of skin cancer and cataracts.

What does pollution do to the levels of Ozone and what does that mean for our health?

Ozone increases at low altitudes because of POLLUTION. This irritates the mucous membranes which can cause serious health problems.

What did NEWTON discover?

That there is an invisible force that pulls us to the center of the Earth: Gravity

What is the Universal Law of Gravity?

Newton's law of universal gravitation states that a particle attracts every other particle in the universe using a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

What is the definition of WEIGHT?

The gravitaional force of attraction that the Earth exerts on a body.

What is the definition of MASS

Mass is the quantity of matter contained in a body.

Does Mass or Weight change when you are on the moon? Explain

Your mass will not change because the amount of matter in the body stays the same.

But your weight will change because there is less gravitational force pulling you down to the moon.

What does gravity change with?

Gravitation Force changes with the MASS and RADIUS of a planet.

True or False: The LARGER the planet, the greater the force of gravity.

True. The larger the planet the greater the gravitational force.

What are the RESULTS of gravity?

Keeps Earth in orbit around the Sun

Keeps your feet on the ground

Assembles the Stars into Galaxies

Name the 4 forces acting on a glider

Drag, Lift, Thrust and Weight

Define DRAG

Air Resistance, resists forward motion

Define LIFT

Perpendicular to the flow of the air: UPWARDS

Define THRUST

Acceleration in a particular direction: FORWARD

Define WEIGHT

Must overcome the weight of the glider due to gravity: DOWNWARD
