What is Phosphorescence and examples

Emits light for a short time after exposed to another energy source

Glow in the dark objects

What is electric discharge and examples

Emits light when electricity passes through a gas

Lightning, Neon tube lights

What is Fluorescence and examples

Emits light while receiving energy from a source

Fluorescent tube lights

What is Chemiluminescence and examples

When Chemical energy turns into light energy with little to no change in temperature

Glow stick/Lightstick

What is bioluminescence and examples

When living things transform chemical energy into light energy

Fireflies, Glow-worms

What is a shadow

An area where light is covered by an object

What is an Umbra

An area where no light reaches

What is a Penumbra

An area where some light reaches

Properties of light (6)

-Travels in straight paths

-Travels at a constant speed of 300m m/s

-Travels as an EMR and particle

-reflects

-Refracts when passing through materials

-Can absorb into materials

Types of EMR

Radio waves, Microwaves, infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma rays

What is transparency

Measure of how much light passes through an material

What does Transparent mean and examples

Lets light pass through easily

Plate glass, Air, shallow/clear water

What does Translucent mean

Transmits and reflects light, clear image cannot be seen through

Frosted glass, Clouds, fingernails, skin

What does Opaque mean

No light can pass through. Light energy is either absorbed or reflected

Wood, Stone, Brick

Why do we see color

We see color because when white light hits an opaque object, it is either reflected or absorbed. when it is absorbed, we don't see color. When it is reflected, we see color. For example, if an object is blue, that means that blue is being reflected while the other spectral colors are being absorbed.
