What is ecology?

Ecology is the branch of biology thatdeals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physicalsurroundings.

What is a biome?

A biome is a large naturally occurringcommunity of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g. forest or tundra.

What is an ecosystem?

Communities of organisms that interactwith each other and their environment.

What are the Major Biomes

Tundra, Forest, Desert, Grassland and Aquatic.

What is the carbon cycle?

The series of processes by which carboncompounds are inter converted in the environment, involving the incorporation ofcarbon dioxide into living tissue by photosynthesis and its return to theatmosphere through respiration, the decay of dead organisms, and the burning offossil fuels.

Why is carbon so important?

Carbon forms the key component for allknown life on Earth. Complex molecules are made up of carbon bonded with otherelements, especially oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, and carbon is able to bondwith all of these because of its four valence electrons.

What is the nitrogen cycle?

The nitrogen cycle is the series ofprocesses by which nitrogen and its compounds are inter converted in theenvironment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation anddecomposition.>

Why is nitrogen so important?

Nitrogen is a component of amino acidsand urea. Amino acids are the building blocks of all proteins. Proteinscomprise not only structural components such as muscle, tissue and organs, butalso enzymes and hormones essential for the functioning of all living things.

What is the water cycle?

The cycle is evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.

Why is water so important?

It keeps us alive and provideshydration for animals on earth; it also helps plants grow and acts as a food tosome plants.
