What is matter?

Matter is anything that takes up space.

What are the three major states of matter?

Solid- Definite shape and volume


Liquid- Shape fits its container, definite volume


Gas- Indefinite shape and volume

List qualitative observations that could be made about a sample of matter.

Colour, state, lustre, malleability, odour, texture etc.

List quantitative observations that could be made about a sample of matter.

Temperature, density, mass, melting/burning point, etc.

What is the difference between physical and chemical properties?

-A physical property can be observed without changing the substance into something new.
(Colour, state, lustre, malleability, odour, texture, etc…)
- A chemical property changes the original substance when it is observed. (Flammability, reaction
with acid, acid or base, etc…)

List the 5 major clues that a chemical change is occuring.

Bubbles form or a new odour
- A drastic, unexpected colour change
- A change in temperature occurs
- Light is emitted
- A precipitate forms
- Any new substance is formed

What are the gases in the gas test?

Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon Dioxide

Describe the gas tests.

Hydrogen Test: Flaming splint into test tube, positive for H2 if a “pop” is heard.
- Oxygen Test: Place a glowing splint into test tube, positive for O2 if splint bursts into flames.
- Carbon Dioxide: Bubble gas through limewater solution. Positive for CO2 if limewater turns
cloudy.

What are the kinds of variables in a scientific experiment?

Control Variable- The variable that is kept constant throughout the experiment


Independent Variable- The variable purposely changed by the experimenter.


Dependent Variable- The variable that may change in response to the independent variable.

Describe the particle theory of matter.

1. All matter is made of tiny particles.


2. All particles of one substance are the same. Different substances are made of different particles.


3. The space between the particles are large in comparison to the sizes of the particles themselves.


4. The particles are always moving. The more energy that particles have, the faster they move.


5. There are attracting forces among particles.
