What are the seven Characteristics of Living?

Movement

Respiration

Sensitivity

Feeding

Excretion

Reproduction

Growth

Explain Movement.

Usually happens more quickly in animals than plants e.g. birds flying or person walking

Harder to see in plants e.g.

Roots growing through the soil

Flower buds opening

Petals closing

Animals move for food/water, to find mates, to mark their territory

Plants move by growing towards light, gravity and water.

Plants move by growing towards light, gravity and water.

Explain Respiration.

All living things need energy.

Respiration is the release of energy from food.

If oxygen is used in process, you are aerobic

If no oxygen is used in process, you are anaerobic.

Equation for Aerobic Respiration: Food+oxygen= carbon dioxide and water and energy.

Explain Sensitivity.

Sensitivity is how organisms react to changes in their surroundings (stimuli).

Animals react quickly to pain, pressure, heat and cold

Plants react to light, gravity, chemicals and water.

Explain Feeding.

Feeding is how organisms get and use their food.

Animals eat plants or other animals

Plants make their own food using photosynthesis.

Explain Excretion.

Excretion is the removal of waste products made during chemical reactions in the body.

Animals excrete carbon dioxide, water and salts

Plants excrete oxygen, carbon dioxide and water.

Explain Reproduction.

When organisms form more of their own species so that they don't become extinct.

Explain Growth.

All living things increase in size.

What are the 2 groups animals are divided into?

Vertebrates: have a back bone.

Invertebrates : don't have a back bone.

What are the 5 groups vertebrates are divided into?

Amphibians: these have moist skin and can live in water or on land e.g. frogs, toads.

Reptiles: these have dry, scaly skin and lay eggs on land e.g. lizards, snakes.

Birds: these have feathers and toothless beaks e.g. pigeon, sparrow.

Mammals: these have fur and the mothers feed their young with milk e.g. humans, dogs, bats, whales.

Fish: these all have scales on their skin and have gills, allowing them to breathe underwater e.g. cod, salmon.

What do we use to identify plants and animals?

We use a key.
