A LIVING THING THAT CAN USE SUNLIGHT TO MAKE SUGARS. FOR EXAMPLE, PLANTS PRODUCE COMPLEX SUBSTANCES THAT ANIMALS USE AS FOOD.
PRODUCERS
A LIVING THING THAT CANNOT MAKE ITS OWN SUGARS AND MUST EAT OTHER ORGANISMS.
FOR EXAMPLE, ANIMALS GET ENERGY AND NUTRIENTS BY EATING OTHER ORGANISMS.
CONSUMERS
ALL THE POPULATIONS IN ONE ECOSYSTEM...
ALL THE ORGANISMS THAT LIVE TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE AND DEPEND ON EACH OTHER FOR FOOD.
COMMUNITY
THE PATHWAY THROUGH WHICH ENERGY AND MATERIALS (NUTRIENTS) MOVE THROUGH A COMMUNITY.
FOOD CHAIN
THE DIFFERENT FOOD CHAINS IN A COMMUNITY.
FOOD WEB
A DIAGRAM THAT COMPARES THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY AVAILABLE AT EACH LEVEL OF THE FEEDING ORDER IN A COMMUNITY.
ENERGY PYRAMID
AN AREA OF THE WORLD DIVIDED INTO SMALLER PARTS IN ORDER TO STUDY OF HOW ORGANISMS AND NONLIVING MATERIALS ACT TOGETHER.
ECOSYSTEM
CIRCULAR PATHWAY IN WHICH WATER MOVES THROUGH THE ENVIRONMENT.
WATER CYCLE
CIRCULAR PATHWAY IN WHICH CARBON DIOXIDE AND OXYGEN MOVE THROUGH THE ENVIRONMENT.
CARBON DIOXIDE-OXYGEN CYCLE
CIRCULAR PATHWAY IN WHICH NITROGEN MOVES THROUGH THE ENVIRONMENT.
NITROGEN CYCLE
A LARGE GEOGRAPHIC REGION IN MANY LOCATIONS WITH SIMILAR KINDS OF COMMUNITIES AND CLIMATES. SIMILAR ECOSYSTEMS AROUND THE WORLD ARE GROUPED INTO THESE LARGER GROUPS.
BIOME
THE DISTANCE NOTH AND SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR.
LATITUDE
THE NORTHERNMOST, COLDEST, AND ALMOST TREELESS LAND BIOME THAT COVERS THE NORTHERN PARTS OF EUROPE, ASIA, AND NORTH AMERICA.
TUNDRA
GROUND THAT IS PERMANENTLY FROZEN.
PERMAFROST
BIOME JUST SOUTH OF THE TUNDRA CHARACTERIZED BY CONIFERS. IT HAS COLD WINTERS, BUT ITS SUMMERS ARE LONGER AND WARMER THAN THOSE OF THE TUNDRA.
TAIGA
BIOME CHARACTERIZED BY TREES THAT LOSE THEIR LEAVES EACH YEAR. THIS BIOME HAS FOUR SEASONS.
TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST
BIOME THAT HAS MUCH RAINFALL AND HIGH TEMPERATURES ALL YEAR.
TROPICAL RAIN FOREST
BIOME CHARACTERIZED BY FEW TREES AND MANY GRASSES.
GRASSLAND
BIOME CHARACTERIZED BY VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES AND LITTLE RAINFALL.
DESERT
WATER BIOME THAT HAS A HIGH SALT CONTENT. THIS IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST BIOME.
SALTWATER BIOME
BIOME THAT HAS LOW SALT CONTENT. IT CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO TYPES: THOSE THAT HAVE STANDING WATER (LAKES/PONDS) AND THOSE THAT HAVE RUNNING WATER (RIVERS/STREAMS).
FRESHWATER BIOME
A PLACE WHERE SALT WATER MIXES WTIH FRESH WATER.
ESTUARY
A CONSUMER THAT RETURNS MATERIALS FROM DEAD ORGANISMS TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THEY BREAK DOWN COMPLEX CHEMICALS IN THE BODIES OF DEAD ORGANISMS INTO SIMPLE CHEMICALS THAT CAN BE USED AGAIN BY PLANTS.
DECOMPOSERS
