A comparison of a dimension of an object or substance to an appropriate standard, usually an instrument with a calibrated scale.
measurement
Any measurable property of the physical universe.
dimension
a known quantity that everyone agrees will be used for comparison when measuring
standard
any artificial device made for the purpose of refining, extending, or substituting for the human senses when measuring.
instrument
the segment of a dimension assigned a value of 1 for measuring purposes
unit
the spacing of the marks on the instrument
calibrated scale
A system of measurement in which all units of a given dimension are related to each other by powers of 10.
the metric system
The global metric system.
SI
any factor equal to 1 that consists of a ratio of two units.
conversion factor
the mathematical difference between the measured value and the actual value.
error
evaluates how close a measurement is to the actual value
accuracy
evaluates how exactly a measurement is made
precision
A digit in a measurement used to communicate the precision of the measurement. The digits are all the known digits plus one that is estimated.
significant digits (SD)
A more convienient way of writing large or small numbers.
scientific notation
can indicate the amount of matter in an object, but does not measure the amount of matter directly.
weight
balances the pull of the earth's gravity on an object being weighed against the pull of a spring inside the instrument.
spring scale
measures weight by converting the pull of gravity on an object into an electronic signal that is processed by a computer chip. The weight is displayed on a digital screen.
electronic scale
A simple instrument that compares a known mass to an unknown mass using a lever arm. When balanced, the weight of the known mass equals the weight of the unknown mass.
balance
An electronic instrument that measures the weight of an object and then displays its equivalent mass.
electronic balance
the space enclosed or occupied by an object
volume
the curved surface of a liquid in a container with a narrow neck.
meniscus
a property of matter that can be used to identify certain kinds of matter, expecially pure substances.
Density
