What is a chemical equation?
A chemical equation is a recipe for a chemical reaction. It indicates the number of ingredients and the number of "servings" produced.
What is a reactant?
A reactant is an "ingredient" in a chemical reaction. It appears on the left side of a chemical equation.
What is a product?
A product is a "serving" in a chemical reaction. It appears on the right side of a chemical equation.
What is a coefficient?
A coefficient is a number that appears before an atom or a molecule to indicate the number of that atom or molecule that is involved in a chemical reaction.
What are the abbreviations that appear in parenthesis after a molecule in a chemical equation?
The abbreviations indicate the state of the molecules in a chemical equation. Eg. (cr) - means solid, (g) means gas, (l) means liquid, (aq) means dissolved in water.
What does the arrow in a chemcial equation stand for?
The arrow means yield, makes or produces. Sometimes over the arrow there is a word that indicates what is needed for the chemical reaction to take place e.g. electricity, light, heat, etc.
What is the law of conservation of mass?
The law of conservation of mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
What is a balanced equation?
When the number of a specific atoms in the reactants is equal to the number of the same atom in the prodcuts then the equation is balanced. This is necessary because of the law of conservation of mass. Also, the total mass of the reactants must equal the total mass of the products.
What is a synthesis reaction?
A synthesis reaction is a reaction that occurs when two or more reactants combine to form one substance.
What is a decomposition reaction?
n a decomposition reaction, molecules of a substance are broken down into two or more products.
What is a single replacement reaction?
In a single replacement reaction, one element replaces antoher element in a molecule.
What is a double replacement reaction?
In a double replacement reaction, two ions switch places in two molecules. A precipitate is usually fromed during a double replacement reaction.
What is a precipitate?
A precipitate is an insoluble (doesn't dissolve) compound that is formed in a double replacement reaction.
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but is not used up or permanently changed.
What is an inhibitor?
An inhibitor is a substance that slows down or stops a chemical reaction.
What is an endothermic reaction?
An endothermic reaction absorbs energy during the reaction.
What is an exothermic reaction?
An exothermic reaction is a reaction that gives off energy during the reaction.
