groups of classification:

kingdom

phylum

class

order

family

genus

species

binomial system

two parts of name:

first genus then species

genus in capital letters and species in lowercase.

problems with classifying

evolution

bacteria does not interbreed

members of two species interbreed. such as a mule, a horse cross zebra

classification and evolution

organisms are usually closely related except if they live in separate habitats

it is important to know the difference between organisms.

pyramids of biomass

pyramids of biomass show the dry mass of living material at each stage of the food chain.

they are difficult to construct because some organisms feed on different trophic levels.

energy flow

however, at each trophic level much of the energy is transferred into another, less useful forms, such as:

heat from respiration

egestion

excretion

energy used for growth divided by energy input= efficiency

the carbon cycle

carbon dioxide can be locked up in limestone for a long time. the oceans are often called a carbon sink. the carbon in limestone can return to the air as carbon dioxide during volcanic eruptions. carbon needs to be recycled so it can become available to other organisms

the nitrogen cycle

plants take in nitrogen compounds along a food chain.

a number of microorganisms are responsible for the recycling of nitrogen:

decomposers

nitrifing bacteria

deitryifing bacteria

nitrogen fixing bacteria

competition

similar animals living in the same habitats will compete for food even if they are the same species.

an ecological niche describes the habitat that an organism lives in and also its role in the habitat.

competition can be inter-specific and intra-specific

predator-prey relationships

both predator and prey show cyclical changes.

if there are more predators hunting prey then he number of prey if going to decrease therefore the number of predators will decease because of not having enough food.

P2 Revision!

lithosphere

the outer layer of the earth is called the lithosphere. The lithosphere is made up from tectonic plates which are moved by convection currents.

plate tectonic theory

in 1914 Wegener cam up with a theory on how the tectonic plates move however, there was not enough evidence to prove it but in the 1960s new sea floor spreading lead scientists to believe that Wegener's theory was true.

Raw Materials
some raw materials used to construct are found in the earths crust. hardness is compared by rubbing 2 materials together.

Raw Materials

some raw materials used to construct are found in the earths crust. hardness is compared by rubbing 2 materials together.

rock hardness

limestone is sedimentary rock-soft sediments are compressed and cemented together

marble is metamorphic rock- forms when limestone is changed by heat and pressure

granite is igneous rock- formed when magma cools

cement and concrete

thermal decomposition is a reaction where one substances breaks down on heating to give at least 2 new substances

calcium carbonate thermally decomposes when heated.

Reinforced concrete

reinforced concrete has a steel rod or mesh in between it to stop cracks appear and make it with stand harder pressure.

extracting copper

REMEMBER...
OILRIG
oxidation is loss, reduction is gain

advantage- low boiling points
disadvantage-the actual separating process may produce pollution.

alloys

alloys are mixtures containing as least one metal

smart alloys return to their original shape after being heated to a certain temperature.

smart alloys are becoming more important as new ways to use them are found

The Haber process

nitrogen+hydrogen-->ammonia

best conditions:

use a catalyst made of iron

raise temp to 450 degrees

use high pressure 200 atmospheres

the optimum temp is around 450 degrees. although the yield is not very high, the rate is fairly quick. this is the best compromise or 'best of bad balance'
