Big Bang Theory
The theory that all matter and energy in the universe was compressed into a very small volume that 13 to 15 billion years ago exploded and started expanding in every direction.
Galaxy
A collection of stars, dust, and gas bound together by gravity.
Milky Way
A spiral galaxy which contains the solar system which contains Earth.
Light Year
The distance that light can travel in one year.
Prominence
A loop of relatively cool, incandescent gas that extends above the photosphere and above the sun's edge as seen from Earth.
Solar Nebula
A rotating cloud of gas and dust from which the sun and planets formed; also any nebula from which stars and exoplanets may form.
Corona
The outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere.
Supernova
A stellar explosion that is more energetic than a nova.
Black Hole
An object so massive and dense that even light cannot escape it's gravity.
Neutron Star
A star that has collapsed under gravity to the point that the electrons and protons have smashed together to form neutrons.
Main Sequence Star
A star that lies on the diagnol band on the H-R diagram.
Red Shift
It's when the light coming from an object is stretched out to the very most.
Nuclear Fusion
The process in which two hydrogen's fuse to make helium giving off heat and light.
Solar System
It's a group that consists of a star, rocks, and planets that was formed 4.6 billion years ago in the Milky Way Galaxy.
Planetesimal
It's the stage of when a cloud of cosmic dust grains collide together and form a larger body.
Solar Wind
A stream of charged particles that is from the outer atmosphere of the sun.
Solar Flare
An eruption on the Sun's surface from sunspots that can interrupt Earth's electronics.
Sunspot
A cooler and darker spot on the Sun's surface that occur on an 11 year cycle.
Photosphere
It's one of the outer layers of the sun that most people on Earth see everyday.
Aurorae
It's a light show that happens in the poles that occur when the solar flares reach Earth and the particles go into the atmosphere.
Red Giant
A stage in a star's life that occurs when a star runs out of hydrogen to fuse and then fuses helium.
White Dwarf
The last stage in a regular star's life when the star runs out of everything to fuse and shrinks down to the size of the Earth.
