landforms
-natural features on Earth's surface
plains
--huge, vast, flat stretches of land without any hills or mountains
Types of landforms
-hills, valleys, mountains, plains, desert, beaches, etc.
How do landforms change?
-some change in a short period of time, even hours, like when there is a mudslide
-most, however, change over very long periods of time, even millions of years
canyon
-a deep, narrow valley with steep sides and they often have rivers at the bottom
List Three Ways Running Water Can Change Land
1. Water running downhill from mountains
2. Rivers curving
3. Rivers emptying into the ocean
valley
-rivers cut away land along their sides after water journeys downhill and they cut away land along their sides and carry away sediments. This cutting away of the land forms a valley.
delta
-sediments form at the mouth of a river and cause this area of land (deltas are more fertile)
Why do rivers form curves?
-When a river erodes land on one side and deposits sediments along the other side (after slowing down on flatter land after running downhill off a mountain)
How can waves change land?
1. WAVES CAN POUND A ROCKY CLIFF and the constant action of the waves breaks large chunks of rock and eventually become smaller and smaller.
2. WAVES CONSTANTLY RESHAPE BARRIER ISLANDS by removing and depositing sediments on the side of the island that faces the open ocean.
Barrier Island
-long, narrow strips of land formed by deposits of sun that run parallel to a coast.
-they form a barrier between the coast and the ocean and protect coastlines from erosion
-found in most Eastern states
How does wind change land?
-it can act like a sandblaster, carrying sand and bits of rock
-scratches the surface of rock like sandpaper
--wind picks up new bits of rock that has broken off and carries them away
rock sculptures
-wind erosion can sculpt rocks, especially in a dry area like the American Southwest
-these are unusual rock formations caused by wind swirling sand and heavy rains
sand dunes
-hills of sand formed by particles of sand picked up by wind
Kinds of sand dunes (different shapes)
-crescent (like a moon)
-sword (long, wavy ridges)
-star
glaciers
-large, thick sheets of ice on colder parts of Earth
How can ice change land?
-the glaciers change with changes like more snow falling than can melt, the bottom becoming fluid-like and the glacier moving and tearing up rocks right form the ground and the sides of a valley
