What was the scientist's name that thought the earth's continents could have all been together at one time? What was the name of the theory?
Wegener did. The Continental Drift Theory.
What did Wegener call the one big supercontinent?
Pangaea
What three evidences did Wegener use to come up with this theory?
1. Matching geologic features and rocks on different continents.
2. Matching fossils on different continents.
3. Evidences of different climates like glaciers on warm continents.
What did Scientists find out about tectonic plate movement in relation to earthquakes and volcanoes?
They found out that there was earthquake and volcanic activity at the edges of the tectonic plates.
What is the Mid Atlantic Ridge? Where is it?
A long mountain range in the ocean that runs down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean north to south.
What is Paleomagnetism?
Paleomagnetism is when iron-based rocks along ocean ridges are striped with reversing magnetic fields. Cobalt, Nickel, and Iron are metals in the earth and as the core of the earth mixes the magnetism changes; true north slowly changes toward south. This is a VERY slow process.
What scientist came up with the theory that tectonic plates move? How did he explain this?
Hess suggested that magma rose to form new rock at certain places and this magma (melted rock) rises and falls (convection) and makes a conveyor belt.
