The pale, straw-colored fluid in which the fetus floats, modified by the fetus' swallowing, urinating, and movement through the respiratory tract.
Amniotic fluid
Function of amniotic fluid

Consists of how much by end of pregnancy

Cushioning, maintain contant body temperature of fetus. Contains fetal urine & is a measure of fetal kidney fx. Is modified by fetal swallowing & urination.

800-1200 Mls by end of pregnancy

Rebounding of the fetus against the examiner's finger on palpation. When the examiner taps the cervix, the fetus floats upward in the amniotic fluid. The examiner feels a rebound when the fetus falls back.
Ballottment
Bluish coloration of the mucous membranes of the cervix, vagina, and vulva that occurs at about 6 weeks of pregnancy and is a probable sign of pregnancy.
Chadwick's sign
Actual event of birth; the expulsion or extraction of the neonate
Delivery

About 280 days

Stage of fetal development that lasts from day 15 until approximately 8 weeks after conception or until the embryo measures 3 cm from crown to rump
Embryo
Uniting of the sperm and ovum, which occurs within 12 hours of ovulation and within 2-3 days of insemination, the average duration of viability for the ovum and sperm
Fertilization
Softening of the cervix that occurs at the beginning of the second month of gestation and is a probable sign of pregnancy
Goodell's sign
a pregnant woman
gravida
a pregnant woman during the first pregnancy
primigravida (gravida I)
a pregnant woman during the second pregnancy
gravida II

2 or more- Multigravida at least second+

Compressibility and softening of the lower uterine segment that occurs at about 6 weeks of gestation, a probable sign of pregnancy
Hegar's sign
Attachment of the zygote to the uterine wall 6-10 days after conception
Implantation
Coordinated sequence of involuntary uterine contractions resulting in effacement and dilation of cervix, followed by expulsion of the fetus/neonate
labor
the ratio of two components of amniotic fluid, used for predicting fetal lung maturity
Lecithin (L)-to-Sphingomyelin (S) ratio

L/S Ratio
Normal L/S ratio in amniotic fluid
2:1 or higher indicates fetal lung maturity
discharge from the uterus that consists of blood from the vessels of the placental site and debris from the decidua
lochia
how long does lochia last following delivery
2-3 weeks
determines the estimated date of confinement and works on the premise that the woman has a 28-day menstrual cycle.
Nagele's Rule
How is Nagele's Rule calculated?
Add 7 days to the first day of the last menstrual period.
Subtract 3 months. Add 1 year.
A human offspring from the time of birth to 28 days; aka newborn
neonate
an abnormally small amount or absence of amniotic fluid; associated with fetal renal abnormalities
Oligohydramnios
The number of pregnancies that have been carried to viability
Parity
the organ that provides for the exchange of nutrients and waste products between the fetus and mother, produces hormones to maintain pregnancy, and develops by the 3rd month of gestation; also called afterbirth
placenta

Placenta barrier to

Large particles such as bacteria cannot pass through. Nutrients Drugs antibodies and viruses can pass

Transfer of maternal immuno

Through placenta beginning in 3rd trimester thru first few wks after birth

first perception of fetal movement, appearing usually in the 16-20th week of pregnancy
Quickening
Phospholipid needed to keep the fetal lung alveoli from collapsing; amount is usually sufficient after 32 weeks
Surfactant
Located behind the symphysis pubis, between the bladder and rectum.
Uterus
4 Parts that make up the uterus
Fundus (upper part)
Corpus (body)
Isthmus (lower segment)
Cervix
A tubular structure located behind the bladder and in front of the rectum; extends from cervix to vaginal opening in perineum.
Vagina
Functions of the vagina
Outflow tract for menstrual fluid, and vaginal and cervical secretions; Birth canal; Organ for coitus (sex)
The capability of the fetus to survive outside the uterus; about 22-24 weeks after LMP or fetal weight of 500 g or more.
Viability

Chronic Villus Sampling

By wk 10-12 genetic testing can be done via placenta

GTPAL

G-gravidity

T-term

P-preterm

A-abortion/miscarriage-included in gravida b4 20wks-included in parity after 20wks

L-number of living children
