Span of Control
Means that there is a certain number of officers that a supervisor can effectively supervise. This number is generally felt to be between 6 and 8, depending upon the type of assignments the officers have. More than this may cause lack of control and productivity.
Chain of Command
Means every person has only ONE supervisor or boss. That person in turn has a supervisor or boss. This continues to the top of the organization and to run effectively, an officer cannot be given orders from different supervisors.
May be defined as "channels of communication and control" within an organization.

Define Management
1) Management is the process of directing and controlling people and things so that organizational objectives can be accomplished.

2) Management is a system, function of process of committing organizational resources toward the accomplishment of organizational goals.
Define Supervision.
1) Supervision is the function and activity of ensuring that the objectives and mission of the organization are met through established guidelines, policies and procedures.

2) Supervision, as part of the management process, refers to the act of overseeing people. It is most important at the first line level- the Sergeant's level. This is where most of the work is actually performed that most directly affects citizens.
