It makes us aware of the areas that pose the greatest potential for risk of injury, illness, and environmental contamination.
Possible Hazards.
Unguarded machinery
Improper Lifting Chemical contamination Combustible/Flammable items Noise Ungrounded Wires Poorly designed computer workstations |
OSHA !!!
!!!!!!! STUDY STUDY STUDY !!!!!!!!! |
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Requires: Employee training on hazardous meterial handling, access to information sheets, a safe healthy work environment for all employees. Requires informed employees !!! |
Mechanical.
How can we Protect ourselves?
Machine Guards Lockout and Tagout Devices used during maintenance Personal protective equipment Properly trained workers |
Safety devices on machinery...
Pressure clamps must be in place before the cutting blade can come down.
Light beam barriers Required use of two hands Barrier/Machine Guards Machine guards can be metal or plastic. Nip point: exist where two cylinders meet or come close to one another. |
Lock-out device

Ear plugs Disposable gloves Aprons Dust mask Protects from VOC in the air Have to have close toed shoes in the safety lab ( Foot Protection) |
Chem. handling
Keep floors clean and dry
Never use chemicals or machinery that youve never been trained on !!!!! Never take a rag to a moving press !!!!! |
Safe lifting
Clear path
Check the weight Request Help When lifting bend with your knees Keep back straight Keep the object close to your body Tighten your stomach Deliver carefully |
Chem. handling 2.
Do not pour chemicals down the drain !
Let teacher know when there is a spill Wash your hands before you eat |
MSDS SHEETS
Material Safety Data Sheet
Medical and health hazards Flammability Overexposure limits and effects Spill procedures PPE |
Fire Prevention
Paper dust and Set-off powder vacuumed up or wiped off machinery.
Pour chemicals in a well ventilated area away from ignition sources. Proper disposal of in or solvent soaked rags. Know where fire extinguishers are located. Properly label flammable materials. Watch for potential sources of fire such as overflowing safety container and open chemical containers. Know the evacuation route. |
Noise
Excessively loud noise can cause loss of hearing.
90 dBA;s is the max level of sound that one can be exposed to during an 8 hour day or time limits and ear protection must be put into place. dBA = Decibels: unit of measures for sound. |
Ergonomics Hazards.
Fitting the job to the worker
When the worker is sitting, are the legs horizontal? Lower legs vertical? Feet flat? Wrists flat? Padded chair with rounded from? Adjustable backrest? Lumbar (back) support? Detachable keyboard? Work surfaces height and tilt adjustable? Do keying actions |
