Do infections usually kill earlier or later in life?
Earlier in life. Children are more susceptible to infection.
What is the greatest prevention for infection?
1.) Sanitation
-prevents illness transmitted by water and food and is the most important.
2.) Vaccination
3.) Antibiotics
What were Koch's Postulates and why are they not exactly correct?
Identify
Isolate
Introduce
Reisolate

Not all microbes are culturable or disease causing. Some diseases only occur in humans so we cannot introduce to observe. Some diseases are polymicrobial (caused by more than one microbe).
What is the new molecular Koch's postulates?
Identify: phenotype/gene in strain

Alter: gene manipulation should affect virulence

Restore: Gene recovery should restore virulence
Which bacteria has two lipid bilayers?
Gram negative bacteria have two lipid bilayers to compensate for its small or absent cell wall.
Describe the thick cell wall of gram positive bacteria.
Gram positive bacteria have a thick cell wall made of the polysaccharide peptidoglycan. This is clearly seen with a crystal violet stain and lacks an outer lipid bilayer.
Compare and contrast gram postive vs. gram negative bacteria.
Gram positive bacteria have an inner lipid bilayer with a thick outer cell wall made of peptidoglycan.

Gram negative bacteria have an inner lipid bilayer followed either by a VERY small cell wall or nothing and covered by an additional lipid bilayer.
