PNC G (Parenteral/Aqueous)
Class: Antibiotic, Narrow spectrum

Use: Tx of infections caused by susceptible organisms; active against some gram-+ (not Staphylococcus aureas), some gram- (Nisseria gonorrheae) and some anaerobes and spirochetes

Mechanism of Action: Interferes with bacterial CELL WALL synthesis- bactericidal

Warnings/Precautions: don't inject near arteries or major peripheral nerves. Be careful with renal or concomitant renal & hepatic involvement (dosage adjustment may be required). Also be careful with asthmatic pt.s. Also adjust dosage for neonates. Product contains Na & K so high does may alter serum levels.

Lab Monitoring: Do C&S before administering 1st dose
If giving in high doses or for prolonged periods, monitor electrolytes

Adverse reactions: only in high doses. Just watch for a hypersensitivity reaction.

Nursing Actions:
PE: results of C&S, pt's allergy Hx,
Advise pt's with diabetes about use of Clinitest (may cause false +/-)

Education: Can only be given injection or IV infusion, hydration (2-3 L/day)
Use alternate form of contraception
Possible suprainfection
