Rule 1:

Know the boiler.

Rule 2:

Check the fire as frequently as other duties will permit for colour, stability and turbulence.

Rule 3:

Maintain the water levels.

Rule 4:

If the water level does become too low, bank the fires immediately (cut off gas supply) and allow the boiler to cool slowly.

Rule 5:

When the boiler is out of service for cleaning, the water column connections must be thoroughly cleaned and all scale and mud removed.

Rule 6:

Blowdown the boiler at proper intervals.

Rule 7:

Use the soot blowers frequently enough to keep the boiler heating surfaces clean.

Rule 8:

Test safety valves at intervals by increasing the pressure until the point that they are supposed to blow. If the boiler is equipped with a superheater, make sure the superheater valve blows first.

Rule 9:

The boiler will be thoroughly cleaned and washed out annually.

Rule 10:

The baffles should be examined periodically to see that they are tight and in place.

Rule 11:

The steam gauge will be tested for accuracy at least every time the boiler is down for cleaning.

Rule 12:

Each boiler is fitted with an automatic stop-and-check valve on the steam outlet. These should be checked at regular intervals for scale accumulation.

Rule 13:

Oil should be kept out of all boilers and feed water.
