First Study
All but one of the pseudo-patients were diagnosed and admitted with schizophrenia, and was discharged eventually with a diagnosis of schizophrenia in remision, and not sane. the length of hopitalisation varied from 7 to 52 days with an average of 19 days.
In Hospital
While in hospital there was limited contact between the staff and patients with only 11.3% of the total time spent working on the ward by staff.
'Real' patients in the hospital regularly voiced their suspicions, with 35 out of 118 making statements such as 'you're not crazy' and 'you're a journalist'. The nurses records showed that for three participants their writing habit was seen as pathological behaviour.
Seccond study
193 participants that the hospital made judgements on, none of which were pseudo-patients sent by R'han.
41 of them were judged to be a pseudo patients by at least one member of staff and 23 were suspected of being a pseudo patient by a psychiatrist.
Concluded
Failure to detect sanity could be due doctors are more inclined to show a type 2 error (call a healthy person sick) rather than a type one error (to call a sick person healthy).
However, once labelled insane it will stick to you and all your behaviour will be seen through this label causing many normal activities to be seen as abnormal.
Any diagnosis process that lends itself so readily to massive errors cannot be a very reliable one.
