Define Microorganism
a living thing that can only be seen under a microscope
What is a Pathogen?
a pathogen is a microorganism that cause disease and infection.
List 2 Bacteria that are most common in hospitals:
Staphylococcus - Found in pimples, boils, wounds

Streptococcus - This causes strep throat rheumatic heart disease, scarlet fever & septicemia, and pneumonia

Hospital acquired are called Nosocomial
List other bacteria
E.Coli - Found in the GI tract. (Feces, stool, BM.) Can cause UTI's & PID

Bacilli - Causes TB, Typhoid fever, Tetanus & Diphtheria.
What drug do we use to Rx Bacteria infections
Antibiotics -With over use these drugs are causing the bacteria to be resistant to the antibiotics.

Ie: MRSA - Methicillin resistant staph aureus. & VRE - Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus
Name 6 Conditions that affect the growth of bacteria
1. Left over food
2. Moisture
3. Oxygen
4. Warmth 50 - 110 degrees
5. Darkness
6. Dead & living matter
Fungus
They appear in form of molds & mushrooms. They are the cause of infections to the skin such as athlete's feet and ringworm. It also causes thrush of the mouth & Throat and vaginal infection.
Virus
Grow in lining cells and cannot be treated with antibiotics.
They cause the common cold, herpes zoster, hepatitis and influenza.

Some vaccinations are available to prevent some viruses.
Parasites
These organisms live in or on another organism from which they obtain their food to survive.

Common diseases from parasites are: malaria, trichomonas of the vagina, fungi, lice, scabies and trichinosis from pork that is not cooked enough.
List the 6 components that make up the chain of infection
1. Causative Agent-Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and insects.
2. Reservoir - Health Care Worker, pt., equipment & environment.
3. Portal of Exit - Wound drainage, urine, feces, blood & saliva.
4. Method of Transmission - Airborne, droplets, Direct & Indirect contact, (Vehicle)
5. Portal Of Entry - Open skin or cut skin, eyes, mouth, respirator, urinary, or reproductive tract.
6. Susceptible Host - The Health Care Worker, pt., visitor or family.
Hand Washing
Is the single most important way to prevent the spread of disease causing microbes.
OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Regulates and follows up on safety issues for employees in the work setting.
Uncontaminated Means
Clean Or Aseptic
Face Masks
How long are they effective?

Until they become wet or moist.

Then the mask must be changed.
Contaminated
Means Dirty or Septic?

What areas are dirty?
Sinks, faucets, side rails, used items or equipment, hands
Name 5 Ways Microorganisms are spread or or transmitted
1. Direct Contact - Touching the pt. & or their
2. Indirect Contact - Touching the pt's belongings that are contaminated.
3. Droplets - spray from a contamiated person within a 3 feet area. (Coughing, Sneezing and Talking)
4. Airborn Transmission - Dust & or moisture that is in the air or ventilation system.
5. Vehicle - Contaminated water, food, drugs, blood, or animal that enters the portal of entry.
Signs & Symptoms of Infection
1. Anorexia
2. N/V
3. Diarrhea
4. Disorientation
5. Fatigue or Lethargy
6. Pain
7. Rash
8. Redness
9. Swelling
10. Tenderness
11. Drainage
12. Fever
13. Increase Pulse & Resp rates
Microorganisms
1. Where are they?

2. Do They all cause Disease?
1. Every Where

2. No, some are helpful but some are pathogenic
