Patrician and Plebeians

A patrician was a wealthy and privileged member of the upper class. A plebeian was one the common people who made up most of the upper class like farmers, artisans, etc.

Twelve Tables

A written law code similar to Hammurabi's and the Ten Commandments. It was the basis of Roman Law and it created a stable society in Rome.

Language

Latin was the main language in Rome and remained even after the fall of the West Empire. It influenced other languages and some were later called the Romantic languages.

Architecture and Engineering

The arch, the dome, and concrete were combined to built the Colosseum, arches also supported bridges and aqueducts. The army built roads that connected all of the empire.

Constantine

Restored the single ruler concept and moved the capital to Byzantium(Constantinople) for trade and defense purposes.

Diocletian

He divided the empire in half, doubled the size of the army, limited personal freedom, and set fixed prices for goods to restore order.

Punic Wars

Three wars between Rome and Carthage, resulted in destruction of Carthage and Rome's dominance over the western Mediterranean.

Pax Romana

It means Roman peace, provided ideal conditions for Christianity to spread fairly and safe.

Jesus

He spread his ideas through preaching, teaching, good works, and performed "miracles" which led to the forming of Christianity.

Fall of the Roman Empire

The empire was split into the west and east then the western empire collapsed due to worsening internal problems, division of Rome, and outside invasions.

Theodosius

Made Christianity the empire's official religion in 380.

Christianity

Became Rome's official religion in 380 and was founded by Jesus Christ. It grew because it appealed to the common, had a loving god, and promised eternal life after death.

Geography

Near the Mediterranean Sea and the Tiber River on the Italian peninsula built on hills near the Apennines Mt. range, Rome also had fertile soil.

Social Equality

Women had some legal rights, could own property, and make wills.

Augustus

Took control of Rome with Mark Anthony and Lepidus then took Rome for himself. He then became the unchallenged ruler and started the Roman Empire.

Julius Caesar

A military leader who took control of Rome and was appointed dictator for life in 44 BC.
