Historically: Virgil was a poet and an Italian which made Dante idolize him. Virgil was also considered a profit as in one of books he foretold the coming of Christ. Virgil is a mediator between old and new views in Rome. Allegorically: he represents reason or human wisdom and therefore it is reason that guides Dante through hell this is prominent in Virgil gets tricked and it shows how even reason can be tricked |

The Malebolge are the evil pockets located in the eight circle of hell. All sinners in the eight circle have committed simple fraud. |
