The circuit system was developed in 1975 that breaks the US into 12 circuits. This allows competitors to stay in one area and not have to travel the country. All of the money won, inside or outside of the competitors circuit, goes towards the world standings. Top 24 qualifiers of 12 circuits compete. The top 8 from each event advance to the semi finals. The top 4 then move on to the final round.

Judges are allowed to award a cowboy a re ride if they feel the bull did not perform at the level of the rest of the bulls. In Saddle Bronc, a re-ride may be awarded if the horse stalls when the gate is open, hits the rider against the chute on the way out, or if the horse bumps the chute corner. It is also possible to get a re ride if the judges feel the horse interferes with the riders position during the first, most important, jump.

What is an association saddle?

This is what riders use on bronc. It is a saddle that was designed and become standardized for saddle bronc. It sits on an association tree.

What is a rigging and for which event is it used?

In bareback riding, this is the handle that the riders hang on to. It looks like a heavy peice of leather with a suitcase handle attatched to it.

What is a bronc rein?

A thick rope this is attatched to the halter on the bronc. The rope is used to help maintain balance as well as give the cowboy something to hold on to.

How does a cowboy measure his bronc rein?

A cowboy meausures the rein by pulling the rein snug across the front of the saddle, also called the fork, with their fist against the back of the fork with their thumb extended.

This is the bag that the cowboys would carry all of their belongings in. A cowboy travelled lightly, therefore these were the possessions that he felt close to him and the need to bring on the trip.

The individual's earnings determine the rank in the world. The more money won the higher up they are in the standings. The more they win the higher they rise in the standings. At the NFR there are 10 rounds and each round awards money based on placing. At the end of the 10 rounds, whoever has the most money won in each event is the new World Champion.

What is a dog-fall?

This is an illegal move in steer wrestling where the 4 legs of the steer are facing one way and the head is facing another way. The wrestler must either move the steer so it is facing the same way or let the steer up and do the process again the right way.

Explain "catch-as-catch-can".

In tie-down roping, this is the phrase used to describe the rule that the cowboy can legally catch any portion of the calf before the cowboy can jump to the ground.

Explain "hard and fast".


Explain "lap and tap".

This is when a calf or steer is let out of the chute without a barrier. This could happen when the calf or steer makes it impossible to be roped such as by exiting the arena or by immediately tracking left. The steer or calf could also not exit the chute. The calf or steer is then placed back into the chute without a barrier and the rider back into the box. They take the time from the first run and put it on the clock, the time will resume when the chute is opened. Therefore we get the name Lap and Tap.

What is a jerk line?
The jerk line is used in tie down roping. It is a rope that is attached to the bridle then to a pulley on the saddle. The rest of the rope is hooked to the rider. As the rider dismounts to flank the calf, the rope lets out a series of jerks encouraging the horse to stop and back slowly. As the horse moves back, it maintains tension on the rope so the calf isn't able to get up or move around.
Explain the excessive dragging rule.
The calf must not be drug more than 5 feet. From 5-10 feet the contestant will have a fee of $25. More than 10 feet $100. Intentionally dragging the calf results in a $250 fine and possible disqualification. A neck rope and reins must be attached to the horse to prevent this.

There must be no locked rowels. All rowels must be dulled in bareback and saddle bronc.

What rules protect the animals in PRCA rodeos?

In rough stock events, flank strap must be either neoprene or sheepskin with the exception of bull riding, a cotton rope of at least 5/8 in diameter is allowed. All must be quick release. No sharp edges on any kind of tack for any event. Pods are only allowed for moving animals and are not encouraged. If used it must be on either the hip or shoulder. Arena should be free of rocks and holes. Neck rope must be used in tie-down roping. No stimulants or any other kind of drug be administered to animal. No stock shall be transported longer than 24 hours without being unloaded. Food and water must be provided at that time.

What is the purpose of the barrier?

The barrier is provided to give to steer or calf a head start. With the calf/steer slightly ahead, it allows the contestant a better chance of angling up and getting aligned to the calf.

Explain the jerk down rule.

Jerk down is defined as flipped over backward landing on head or back with all 4 feet in the air. This automatically qualifies for a $100 fine.
How does a barrier work?

The barrier stretches across the length of the box. There is also a section attached around the calf's/steer's neck. This allows for a trigger. The calf/steer is let out of the chute, as they run out of the chute the neck piece comes off and lets the barrier free, then the horse and rider can come through.
What are the 2 "scores" in rodeo?

How does someone become a member of the PRCA?

They must first become a permit member and fill a permit. If they are at least 18 years old and have filled the Permit they may apply for the Contestant Card.
What is ground money?
This is when the money paid for the purse in an event is split equally and paid to all contestants in the event. This can be possible if all of the contestants fail to qualify.
What is a purse?

This is the money paid to the event winners. It equals the total of the added money and the entry fees.

What is prize money?

This is money offered or received as a prize.
What is a sunfisher?

This describes a horse that bucks and all 4 feet stick out to the side instead of underneath or behind the animal.`

What is a headhunter?
This is a bull that is constantly looking for a 2 legged target.

What is a money bull?

This is a bull who usually gets the rider paid if they make the 8 seconds.

What is a neck rope? What is it's purpose? (2 types)

There are 2 kinds of neck ropes. The first is hooked onto the calf or steers neck to trip the barrier. The other is used in tie-down roping. It is a rope tied around the horses neck. It keeps the horse facing forward and when the rider jumps off the horse the jerk line is also there to help remind the horse to stop and back slowly.
Explain "luck of the draw".
Luck of the draw is used to describe the calf or steer you received. The contestants have an order they must follow. As they go through the order, they don't know what calf or steer they got. What happens will happen.
What is a dally?

A dally is when the calf is roped, the roper then wraps his rope around the saddle horn. The wrap around the horn is called a dally.

What is turning out?

This is when the animal is let out of the chute without the rider due to a problem or injury.
What is stock drawing?

This is when the cowboys draw their ride. The process changes at the different rodeos. Sometimes the draw is done by officials. Other times the riders draw their own ride. At the NFR, the riders draw their own stock.
What is a contract act?
Contract acts provide entertainment for the spectators. These people might include bull fighters, announcers, rodeo clowns and sometimes rodeo queens. There are also specialty acts such as trick riders or singers.

What is a no time?

A no time is when the contestant didn't catch their calf or steer in time or they didn't ride for the full 8 seconds.

Explain a jerk line and its purpose.
A jerk line is a rope connected to the bridle, then to a pulley, then to the rider in tie-down roping. It is used to remind the horse to stop and back up slowly.
