Name 5 types of Igneous rocks

Granite, Basalt, Obsidian, Scoria, pumice.

What is the difference between Weathering and Erosion?

Weathering is the particle becoming de - attached and erosion is the moving of the particles.

Name 5 types of physical weathering.

Temperature change, the action of water and ice, crystallisation, wind, living plants

Name 3 types of chemical weathering

Gases, acids and water

Name the basic components of soil

Soils, texture, structure, water holding capacity, consistency

Name the main uses of igneous rocks

Basalt - building

Pumice - exfoliator

Where are intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks formed

Intrusive - below the surface in a volcano

Extrusive - on the surface of a volcano

Which has bigger crystals, intrusive or extrusive igneous rocks, why?

Intrusive because it cools slow inside the volcano

Name 8 types of sedimentary rocks

Conglomerate, Mudstone, Breccia, Sandstone, halite, gypsum, limestone, coal

Name the 4 clastic sedimentary rocks

Conglomerate, breccia, sandstone, mudstone

Name 3 chemical sedimentary rocks

limestone, halite, gypsum

Name an organic sedimentary rock

coal

Name the uses of sedimentary rock

Limestone - buildings, paving

sandston - building

How do sedimentary rocks form

Sedimentary rocks are rocks made from sediments. The sediments need to be cemented together, this occurs through pressure and because there are substances in rocks and soil that act as natural cements.

How does coal form

They form when dead plant matter or animal debris accumulates and is then cemented together.

How do Metamorphic rocks form?

when high temperature and pressure alter existing igneous and sedimentary rocks

Name 7 metamorphic rocks

slate, schist, phyllite, gneiss, marble, hornfels quartzite

Uses of metamorphic rocks?

Slate is used for roofing, marble is used for building and sculpture, quartz is used for stone tools

Draw the rock cycle

*Rock Cycle*

Name the two most common processes that change a pile of sediment into sedimentary rock.

Compaction and Cementing

Name the two factors that produce metamorphic rock?

Heat and pressure

Explain how different types of cooling affect crystal size in igneous rocks?

If rock cools quickly then crystals are small

If rock cools slow then crystals are big.
