Assembly Line
An invention by Henry Ford, each person would do one part of the assemeling of the car. This made is faster to make one car and made it so car prices could go down.
Harlem Renaissance
Migrants from the south moved to Harlem and brought with them a new kind of music called Jazz. Soon, Harlem had a burst of cultural activity, which lasted throught the 1920's. Harlem became home to all kinds of artists.
Charlie Chaplin
A popular actor during the 1920's. He is also known as the Great Comedian. During the 1920's people had more time to enjoy entertainment like Charlie's.
Mass Media
Communications that reached a large audience. Radio's and Movie's provided new fashions and ideas about lifestyles. New inventions helped mass media.
19th Amendment
It gave women the right to vote for the first time. Women felt free during the 1920's. They started dressing differently and gained more power.
Teapot Dome Scandal
Secretary of Interior, Albert Fall, took bribes and made illegal deals with oil executives to drill on oil-rich government propety land. He eventually went out of office when President Warren G. Harding died.
Warren G. Harding
He was President from 1921 until he died in 1923. His administration was found out to be extremely corrupt after he died. His cabinent consisted of his friends from his hometown. He died unexpectedly in 1923.
Charleston
A dance that became popular in the 1920's. It was a hip and scandalous dance, popular among flappers. It was one of the first dances women did together.
18th amendment
Prohibited alcohol. Forced an increase in organized crime to buy/sell alcohol. It was repealed in 1933
Flapper
A new breed of young women that arose in the 1920's. They wore shorter skirts. They listened to Jazz, and dressed in a new way. They were frowned upon by many older people.
Speakeasy
An establishment that illegally sold alcohol during the prohibition era.
Calvin Coolidge
Took over the presidential office when Harding died. He was an honest man and restored the nations faith in government after they found out about Harding's corruptness. He believed in a Laissez Faire Economy.
Jazz Age
The time during the 1920's when Jazz emerged and became popular. Jazz originated in New Orleans among African Americans. Older people often disliked it, while younger people, especially Flappers loved it. Dances such as the Charleston are done to it.
Isolationist
The opposite of an imperialist. They believe that their country should satty out of other country's affairs except for self-defense reasons. Calvin Coolidge and William G. Harding were isolationists.
Laissez Faire Economy
A belief that business should be left unregulated by the government. Calvin Coolidge believed in this.
Ku Klux Klan
A hate group that discriminated against many groups, such as African Americans and Jews. They had an all time high in membership during the 1920's. They lynched and terrorized people who weren't like them.
Installment Buying
When someone buys something on credit. In other words, when you buy something expensive and can't afford to pay, you can decide to pay for it over a long period of time. This became popular during the 1920's. It allowed people to buy expensive appliances and cars.
Great Depression
The economic crash at the end of the 1920's. It was the result of people borrowing more money than they could afford to pay back.
Bootlegger
Someone who illegally sold alcohol. These were popular during the time where alcohol was illegal in the U.S.
Scopes Monkey Trial
A court case over teaching evolution in schools. It was contreversial because evolution goes against the bible. The teaching of evolution eventually grew and is now tought in schools nation wide.
