Charles Lindbergh
May 20, 1927, Linbergh took off from Long Island. He landed in Paris from a non stop flight 33.5 hours later. After 3,600 miles he was an instant celebrity. He won $25,000.
The Jazz Age
Many people were tired of a war time lifestyle. After the U.S. won, they wanted to have a sense of freedom. There was a new kind of music, jazz, which was a unique blend of western and african music. Much of it is improvised. Musicians like Louis Armstrong and King Oliver's Creole band had influenced music throughout the western world.
The Charleston
A new dance named after the city in South Carolina. It required so much arm movement that the British called women who danced it flappers, a word for birds learning to fly.
Prohibition
It was the banning of the manufacture, sale, and possesion of alcohol, although many people still did it.
Ford Cars
Ford's model T was released in 1908, and at $850 it was too expensive for many. In 1924 it dropped to $290. Many people were able to buy them, and they felt like someone with a car.
Movies
A lot of movies were being produced, and they were a popular thing to go see in the 20's. People had more free time, and they enjoyed seeing different movie stars.
Speakeasy
It was an establishment during the time of prohibition which illegally sold alcohol. Not wanting to get caught, bartenders would tell their customers to keep quiet, and "speak easy".
Style and fashion
Women saved fabric during the war by using less cloth in their clothes. They had shorter dresses and skirts, and the fashion stuck. Meanwhile, men's clothing was getting baggier and longer. Home furnishings, arts, and decorations were also changing very quickly.
Ku Klux Klan
The klan grew to four million in the mid 20's. It was a hate clan that was anti-immigrant, anti-black, anti-jew, and anti-catholic. It gave members a sense of belonging, even when they terrorized and killed people.
