Body in decreased state of activity.
Sleep
State of altered consciousness. It's relative inactivity involves a progression of repeated
cycles.
Non-Rapid Eye Movement
Light Sleep - the person is roused with ease and they moved to a deep
sleep after that. We know that in this state they have a decreased pulse, respiratory rate, blood
pressure, metabolic rate and body temperature.
REM Sleep
The person becomes difficult to rouse and they have dreaming. We know that in this
state pulse, respirations, blood pressure, metabolic rate, temperature, muscle tone and reflexes are all
increased.

Insomnia
Difficulty falling asleep. A person may have intermittent sleep or they may have early
awakening from sleep.
Hypersomnia
This is excessive sleep during the day. A person naps but then may be disoriented with
slower thinking and speech. An example is sleep apnea.
Narcolepsy
Uncontrollable desire to sleep. A person falls asleep quickly and they find it difficult to
wake up. When they do sleep, it is a restless sleep. It is dangerous to themself and others.
Sleep Apnea
Can have absence of breathing or diminished breathing during sleep. The breathing may
cease 10-20 seconds or up to 2 minutes. The person may experiences an irregular pulse, increased
blood pressure, oxygen saturations can drop
Parasomnia
A waking behavior that appears during sleep
Somnambulism
Sleepwalking or sleeptalking. Usually when we try to awaken the person they will be
alarmed and it is known that they can also scream
Enuresis
Urinating during sleep. A lot of these disorders what we have to keep in mind is safety and
prevention.

the decrease in amount, consistency, or quality of sleep
