Martin Luther King, Jr.
○ A Baptist preacher, King helped organize the Montgomery boycott of the city buses, arranged for alternative forms of transportation for local black residents, and met with city officials requesting the end of segregation. The boycott, which was originally expected to last only a few days held strong for an entire year. King spoke to the members of the movement at meetings held in his church and began to gain recognition as a strong voice for adherence to non violence in combating racial injustice
○ Kings methods were premised on three principles
■ refusal to participate in any evil action
■ subordination to oppression was not true peace
■ non violent protest does not stand for the creation of disorder, but rather it exposes the disorder that already is present in society
○ King’s belief principles
■ Followed the Christian doctrine that you must love your enemy and neighbor as yourself. (Caritas)
■ Believed in America oppressed as peoples as a chosen nation (Exodus)
■ Believed in teh merit of redemptive suffering (Christ)
Rosa Parks
Civil rights leader and the face of the Montgomery bus Boycotts due to her refusal to sit in the back of a segregated city bus. This is believed to jump start the Civil Rights Movement in the in the 1960s.
Elijiah Pool/Elijia Muhaad
– Mentor to civil rights leader Malcom X and the leader of Nation of Islam. Believed that the white man were devils. Nation of Islam restores true history of the black man. Explains white man’s ignorance of black history.
Pan-Africanism
– The philosophy endorsed by Marcus Garvey that all Africans are part of a global community with a mythical, glorious past. Includes the idea that many blacks would return to Africa which would united the black citizens into a great nation again. European history overshadowed African history, taking credit.
UNIA
The United Negro Improvement Association is an organization founded by Marcus Garvey with the intention of teaching African Americans about their glorious history and achievement
Exodus
Story in the bible that tells how Israelites escape slavery in Egypt and was lead to the Promised Land by Moses. This story plays a significant role in black culture as they believed they were the Israelites in Egypt and they were god’s chosen ones because of their enslavement. Connections to oceanic feeling.
Indian Religious Crimes Code
Passed in order to outlaw the Sun Dance which contributed to the process of Native American assimilation American culture.
SIGN: Went against the Bill of Rights, suggesting freedom of religion.
Wounded Knee
A massacre which took place at Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota on Dec 28 1890. United states Indian agents became distressed when Indians started the Ghost Dance. In the end, 200 Indians died and 30 dead soldiers.
Sun Dance
An Indian ritual which occurs each summer that lasts three to four days during which time participants are not allowed food or water. This dance represents cleansing and devotion through great suffering and a prayer for good fortunes in the future.
SIGN: Allows Indians to perform their most sacred ritual and bond communities of Indians together as one.
Ghost Dance
Created by the prophet Wovoka. Dance to hasten the prophecy that earth will be covered with new soil which will bury the white men. This new land would be covered with sweet grass running water and herds of buffalo. Indians will prosper on this new land.

The re-enactment in which participants wish to reconnect with an original event of significance. It was also the passing of information without the use of reading.

A realm above everything to which everything is connected. The place from which everything is derived, the source of all things visible in this world.
Freedom Clause/Establishment Clause
First Amendment dealing with freedom of religion, speech, assembly. It is a fundamental right and can only be infringed upon if there is a compelling interest test. It enables the citizen of the U.S. to freely express
SIGNS: Prohibits the federal government from endorsing any single religious denomination.

Virginia Religious Freedom Bill
– Thomas Jefferson wanted to establish religious Freedom in 1777. All Virginia citizens have the right to pursue religious ideas. James Madisoninstituted in 1789.
SIGN: This bill allows the U.S. to be the multi-cultural/religion country as it is today. There is no “right religion” and gives people true freedom of religion.
Agape / Love
Understanding and creative, redemptive goodwill, and overflowing love that seeks nothing in return.
○ This type of love is deeper than what you and I would consider love; it’s a deeper love for all mankind.
○ King makes it a point to say that you must love all, even those who oppress you for everyone is essentially God’s children.
Grants Peace Policy
“I entertain the confident hope that the policy now pursued will in a few years bring all the Indians upon reservations, where they will live in houses, have school houses and churches, and will be pursuing peaceful and self- sustaining avocations.”
