Rest
a state of relaxation and calmness, both mental and physical
Sleep
a state of altered consciousness during which and individual experiences fluctuations in LOC, minimal physical activity, and general slowing of the body's physiologic processes.
NREM sleep
(Non-rapid eye movement) heart rate and respiratory rate slow slightly and remain regular. Stages 1-4
REM sleep
(Rapid eye movement)heart rate and respiratory rate are irregular and often higher than when awake.

Carcadian rhythms
rhythms that cycle on a daily basis
Ultradian rhythms
last much shorter than a day, such as the millisecends it takes for a neuron to fire.
Infradian rhythms
lasting a month or more, such as the monthly menstrual cycle.

those requiring approximately 1 year to complete.

insomnia
difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
Hypersomnia
an alteration in sleep pattern characterized by excessive sleep.
Narcolepsy
a sleep alteration that manifests as sudden, uncontrollable urges to fall asleep during daytime.
Sleep apnea/Snoring
characterized by breating pauses of 30-60 seconds during sleep, interspersed between loud snoring eisodes.
Sleep Deprivation
used to describe prolonged inadequate quality and quantity of sleep, either of the REM or NREM type.
Parasomnia
condition wherin a person suffers profoundly disturbed sleep due to behavioral or physiological events.
Somnambulism
sleepwalking not remembered the next morning
REM movement disorder
when the paralysis that normally occurs durning REM sleep is absent or incomplete and the sleeper acts out the dream that is occuring.
