What is the function of the Alveoli in the respiratory system?

Gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in the alveoli. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses through the walls of the alveoli and adjacent capillaries into the red blood cells. The oxygen is then carried by the blood to the body tissues.

What is the function of the respiratory system ?

A. To provide the body with oxygen and dispose of carbon dioxide

B. To provide the body with enzymes and hormones needed to function.

C. To provide the body with essential nutrients.

D. All of the above

E. None of the above

After being outdoors in the garden, you come indoors to find dirt in the mucus. What function of the respiratory system is your nose performing?

The nasal cavity is a hollow space within the nose and skull that is lined with hairs and mucus membrane. The function of the nasal cavity is to warm, moisturise, and filter air entering the body before it reaches the lungs. This is why you find dirt and other bacteria in the mucus membrane.

What is the formula for respiration?

C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy also know as glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

What is the structure of the respiratory system?

There are 3 major parts of the respiratory system: the airway, the lungs, and the muscles of respiration. The airway, which includes the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, carries air between the lungs and the body’s exterior.

If someone smokes cigarettes for a long time, the alveoli will eventual be coated with tar. Why is this bad for the respiratory system?

Cigarette smoke is acidic and contains many different chemicals. As a result it can cause irritation of the lining of the bronchi and bronchioles. The lining becomes inflamed and swollen and may also become infected. Each time you smoke another it adds to the irritation, lasting for months and even years, causing shortness of breath, coughing and chest pain. This is known as chronic bronchitis.

What happens if you puncture a lung?

When you puncture a lung, the air pressure in the chest cavity increases, causing the lung on the same side to collapse to some extent.

From where does the deoxygenated blood come from? (what uses up oxygen)

The oxygen is exchanged in the capillaries where oxygen is given to the tissues and the blood collects the carbon dioxide from them. De oxygenated is blue because it does not have any oxygen in it. This blood is then brought back to the heart. This then goes to the lung.

Why is the respiratory system important?

The respiratory system does two very important things: it brings oxygen into our bodies, which we need for our cells to live and function properly; and it helps us get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of cellular function.

What are the structures involved in the respiratory system?

The respiratory system consists of all the organs involved in breathing. These include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs.
