Nose
Where air enters the body. Bodies first line of defense for the respiratory system. Lining catches contaminants and also warms air before it enters the windpipe (trachea)
trachea
windpipe, large tube made of rings of cartilage that moves air from the nose to lungs (thru bronchial tubes)
bronchus (plural bronchi)
Major airway passage that goes into each lung
Lungs
main organ of the respiratory system on either side of the heart protected by the ribs. Inside the alveoli exchange gases between air and blood.
alveoli
tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place in the lungs. (oxygen into blood CO2 out of blood
pharynx
cavity behind the nose and mouth connecting them to the esophagus
larynx
voice box
bronchioles/bronchial tubes
smaller sub-division of bronchi and tubes that branch throughout the lung with alveoli at the ends. (like upside down roots)
diaphragm
muscle that helps us breathe inhale it contracts and pulls down as lungs expand when you exhale it relaxes the process reverses as lungs deflate
Main function of the respiratory system
obtain oxygen from the air and remove waste CO2 from the body
nitrogen
what most of air we breath is made up of
cellular respiration
cells using glucose from food and oxygen from breathing to make energy, CO2 is the waste product
Bronchial tubes
move air from the trachea to the lungs
Where lungs are located
either side of the heart, in the thoracic cavity enclosed in the ribs above the diaphragm
cartilage
connect ribs allowing flexibility to make room for lungs to expand when air is inhaled.
