What is spirometry?
Test to measure vital capacity, flow rate and FEV1
What is the inspiratory and expiratory reserve volume?
IRV - The amount of air more the lungs can take in above that of normal inspiration
ERV - Amount which can be breathed out more then normal expiration
What is residual volume and how can it be measured?
The amount of air left in the lung after maximal expiration
Helium dilution
What is vital capacity, inspiratory capactity and functional residual capacity?
FVC - Maximum inspiration to maximum expiration volume (IC + FRC)
IC - Resting expiration to maximal inspiration
FRC - Resting expiration to completely empty lung (expiratory reserve + residual volume)
What is the difference between ventilation rate and respiration trate?
Vent. rate is the amount of air move in and out of the lungs in 1 minute, respiration rate is the normal of breaths taken in a minute
What does a nitrogen washout achieve and how is it preformed?
Gives us the serial dead space volume, a person breaths in pure oxygen and then breaths out into a device that detects nitrogen - When nitrogen is detected the volume breathed out before that is the dead space volume
What is the conducting portion of the airway and the respiratory portion?
nose -> terminal bronchioles
Respiratory bronchioles -> alveoli
Clara cells replace goblet cells in the smaller bronchioles. What is the function of clara cells?
They act to replace damage cells and are protective in function, they also secrete surfactant
What parts of the airway do pseudostratified columnar epithelium cover?
Nose -> largest bronchioles
What epithelium line the smaller bronchioles?
Columnar with cillia and clara cells
What epithelium line the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts?
Cuboidal with clara cells and sparsely scattered cilia
Tpye II pneumocytes secrete what?
Surfactant
As olfactory cells, uni, multi or bipolar nerve cells?
Bipolar
What ype of secretion comes from olfactory glands to flush odours?
Serous
