Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for allergies and common cold. Preventer

Pharma: H1 receptor blocker, antihistamine.

MA: 1st generation. Treats symptoms of allergies and common cold. OTC:combined with analgesics, decongestants, expectorants. Topical: treats rashes. IM/IV treats severe allergic reactions. Parkinsons disease and insomnia. Blocks action of histamine at H1 receptor

MA: intranasal corticosteroid to treat allergic rhinitis. Acts to decrease local inflammation in nassal passages, reduces nasal stuffiness.

Oxymetazdine (Afrin) decongestant, sympathomimetic. Reliever

Thera: decongestant


Pharma: sympathomimetic

MA: activates alpha-adrenergic receptors of the SNP. Nasal passages constrict, dries mucus memebranes. Metered spray or nose-drops. Eye drops: causes vasocontriction of vessel. Adverse effect: rebound congestion.

Serevent (salmeterol) beta-adrenergic agent. Terminate attacks

Thera: antiasthma, anti-inflammatory/bronchodialator


Pharma: beta2-adrenergic agonist

MA: treats asthma and in prevention of broncho spasm. Maintenance treatment for COPD. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm.
