What is the difference b/w obstructive and restrictive lung disease?

Obstructive = narrowing of pulmonary airways

Due to:

- COPD

- Asthma

- Bronchiectasis

- Cystic fibrosis

Restrictive = lungs prevented from fully expanding. Due to:

- muscle weakened or damaged nerves

- stiffened tissue in the chest wall

- asbestosis

- silicosis

- pulmonary fibrosis

What is spirometry and what is it used for?

A spirometer measures how effectively and how quickly the lungs can be emptied and filled by generating a flow volume curve.

To distinguish between obstructive and restrictive pulmonary disease.

checking for reversibility post bronchodilator.

What is FEV1/ FVC ratio.

FEV1 (forced Expiratory Volume) = the amount of gas expelled in one second

FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) = Total amount of gas expelled when a subject takes a deep breath and then forcefully exhales maximally.

the ratio of FEV1/FVC in healthy lungs should be 80% - 80% vol of lung exhaled in 1 second.

obstructive lung disease will have decreased ratio.
